As a child, many of us can recall the heady anticipation of the local county fair every summer.  Foods such as Cotton Candy, Caramel Apples, and French Fries were special treats that the annual fair brought us.  In recent years, unique food offerings such as Deep Fried Oreos, Root Beer Ribs, and Chocolate Covered Bacon have been added to the vast menu of choices.

Moving beyond the typical (and not so typical) foods one can find at a fair, you will also find whimsy at a variety of food festivals.  Some great upcoming August examples for this weekend are:

• The West Point Sweet Corn Festival (Aug 12-15, 2010, West Point IA)http://www.westpointcornfestival.com/index.html , where 17+ tons of corn are cooked and served for FREE during the 4 day Iowa event.  The day before the event, they also hold a giant Shuckfest, where everyone lends a hand to get the massive amount of corn ready for the festival!

• The 7th Annual Tomato Art Fest (Aug 14, 2010, Nashville TN) http://tomatoartfest.com/, includes a Bloody Mary Competition for the adults (sponsored by http://3crowbar.com/) and a Make your own Ice Cream Sundae using red "velvet Elvis" ice cream for the kids (sponsored by http://www.thepiedpipercreamery.com/). They even hold a Tomato Haiku Contest!
